(Wo)man of the People?

Meg Whitman, the Republican gubernatorial candidate in California, has branded herself as "regular person" for almost her entire campaign.  I'm somewhat confused how she is allowed to get away with this lie when she has spent a record breaking $119 million of HER OWN MONEY on her campaign.  I pose the question, do you really think that she gives one whit about "regular people?"  Probably not.
