Well, You're Wrong

If you're inclined to believe that Republicans are going to completely regain control of Congress this November, you'd be mistaken.  (One way to not be mistaken is to stop watching Fox News.)  I hear frequently hear the comparison that 2010 is going to be like 1994, and I'd like to address this.  The first thing to is stop watching Fox News.

There are numerous reasons why 2010 is going to be nothing like 1994.  Of course Republicans are going to gain seats.  There is historical precedent for the minority party gaining seats in mid-term elections following Presidential elections.  Another reason is that there were 31 open seats in 1994.  This year there are only 18.  Democrats also have a more favorable rating, 43%, compared to the Republicans, 36%.  While this is not a big difference, it is significant.

Part of the Republican platform in 1994 was Newt Gingrich's "Contract With America," which sounded like a great idea until the newly elected officials got into office and it fell apart.  The new representatives realized they would not be able to serve the needs of their constituents and adhere to Gingrich's contract.

2010 is not 1994; it's a different puzzle, so stop trying to make your old pieces fit into it.
